Shanghai is so westernized that this section is called, “Chinatown.” We will give you some time to browse and look at the many types of shops that are there. You will meet at a designated spot to have lunch in the area. Then you will visit the world-class Shanghai Art Museum. This museum features many fine exhibits including the ancient coin collection, the Chinese furniture, art and especially the Ethnic Minorities exhibit. Day 8YangshouYou will go on the Li Jiang River Cruise. This is one of the most beautiful areas in the whole world; showing the magnificent limestone mountains rising along the riverbanks. You can enjoy the mountains shrouded in clouds and catching a glimpse of the people who live along the riverbanks. Cormorant fishermen still use these unusual birds to catch their daily fish. As the cruise ends, you will disembark in Yangshuo, a quaint village with a very nice street market. Most tours only spend an hour in this village and then return to Guilin. But this is in the midst of the beautiful fantasy shaped mountains. The beautiful mountains are close by and you can go into the countryside to see the beautiful vistas. You can take a bicycle ride or drive outside the city to see some of the most beautiful sites you will ever see, or if you prefer, you can be driven. Then you will spend the night in this beautiful area. B, L

XI'AN - The oldest capital of China and the home of incredible archaeological discoveries and the Eastern-most city of the Silk Road. It is the site of the ancient emperor's burial sites. Xi'an is naturally a flat area. The many hills that you will see there are actually burial mounds of emperors, governors, and other rich dignitaries.

This is the traditional housing in old Beijing that was generally four small houses surrounding a court area. The Hutong has been home to both the poor and the rich. These quaint dwellings are disappearing in the continual modernization of China. If available, we will also arrange for you to have lunch prepared by a local family in the Hutong. After lunch, we will take you to TianAnmen Square, the main meeting place in Beijing, and then to the Forbidden City, the famous Emperor’s Palace from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In addition to seeing the buildings and grounds of the Emperor’s Palace, we will also take you to the Jewelry Collection and the Emperor’s Clock Collection, which Westerners rarely see. B, L, D

To this day, around 50% of Mongols are nomads living in the countryside. Their lifestyle is essentially unchanged for the last 2,000 years (despite the presence of many possible modern conveniences). The Mongol people, once the rulers of the largest empire in the world, are surprisingly gentle and sweet natured.
