Settle into your hotel and relax. We suggest using the afternoon to explore the town square and catch the famous Glockenspeil or perhaps enjoy the local beer in one of the cities many Beer houses.Overnight: Munich (B)Day 3: Munich Today you have another day to explore Munich. Perhaps visit the Nymphenburg Palace, with its numerous waterways, secret castles and its ground which was built as a summer residence for the Bavarian electors or visit the Gothic Church of Our Lady which is an unmistakable Munich landmark. The building has two high towers and offers a remarkable panoramic view of Munich and the nearby Alps. Inside, the church is impressively simplistic in its design.Overnight: MunichDay 4: Munich to Fussen. On your journey from Munich we suggest a detour to view King Ludwig's II Linderhof Castle, one of the most beautiful attractions in Bavaria, and the only one of Ludwig's castles that he finished before he died. It resembles the "petit Trianon" (Versailles). The park, nearly covering 200 acres, with its terraces, which are modeled in the French and Italian Renaissance style and its parterres done in the Baroque style. The main attractions, which can be visited by tourists, are the Maurische Kiosk with its precious peacock throne and the Venus grotto, the boldest of Ludwig's fairy tale realizations, an artificial stalactites grotto, which is a copy of the famous "Blue Grotto" of Capri. Made entirely out of cement with artificial arc lighting, rainbows, wave machines (and heating) to recreate what is described in Wagner's Tannh?user. After your visit of Linderhof Castle continue on to Oberammergau, a picturesque alpine village famous for its woodcarvers and beautiful painted buildings. After you are refreshed by the mountain air, continue on to Fussen.Overnight: FussenDay 5: Neuschwanstein Castle & Fussen Today is your opportunity to go back in time to "Mad" King Ludwig II and pay a visit to the castle that best tells his story. First is Neuschwanstein Castle ("New Swan Stone Castle") which is one of the most beautiful and famous castles in Germany. This fairy tale castle is the epitome of neo-romantic style. The famous German castle overlooks the picturesque Hohenschwangau valley. Construction on the castle began in 1869, but given the exact tastes of King Ludwig II, progress was very slow going. The King was an immense devotee of Richard Wagner, even going as far as naming the castle after a character in one of Wagner's operas--the Swan Knight. In none of the other castles in Germany will you find more instances of Ludwig's fondness for Wagner's work. However, Ludwig's mysterious death--ruled a suicide at the time provides a bit of mystery that makes the atmosphere of Neuschwanstein one of the most intriguing of the castles in Germany.Overnight: FussenDay 6: Fussen to Rothenburg A dozen picturesque small towns line the Romantic Road on today's drive, travel at your leisure and explore any or all. As you head out north out of Fussen your reach the largest city along the Romantic Road and today's ultimate destination, Augsburg. It boasts terrific Baroque and Renaissance architecture in the palaces of the wealthy families who made it one of the region's most important business centers in the Middle Ages. Even further north are the towns of Dinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen. Dinkelsbuhl is a fairy-tale town filled with beautiful 16th century houses, while Nordlingen offers an excellent example of a still-thriving middle Ages market town. Your day concludes with your arrival in Rothenburg for a well-deserved night's rest!Overnight: Rothenburg. (B)Day 7: Wurzburg An early morning departure will allow you sufficient time to explore Wurzburg's Residenz Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site from the 18th century designed by Balthasar Neumann, the baroque architectural genius; or stroll through the Marienberg Citadel, the town's landmark high above the Main Valley, was the residence of the prince bishops until 1719. Its location on a rocky plateau with three of its sides shelving steeply down is so favourable that as early as 1000 BC a fortified refuge was built on it. The oldest part of the citadel still in existence today is the circular church in the inner ward, built around AD 1000. Lastly, for the wine connoisseurs, the wine trail offers almost 3 miles of circular walk paths with panoramic views of the most famous wine-growing regions in Germany. Here you can discover the important cultural legacy of wine making. Information boards explain how the scenery has been shaped by viticulture, how charitable foundations finance themselves and the connection between Goethe and Stein wine. End your day with a quiet drive back to Rothenburg for the evening.Overnight: Rothenburg. (B)Day 8: Rothenburg to Frankfurt Take your time today to explore the last of the Romatic Road. A good final sight would be Heidelberg and in the afternoon visit Heidelberg Castle, perhaps Germany's most famous ruins. Continue on to Frankfurt for your final night.Overnight: Frankfurt (B)Day 9: Departure After returning your car rental you will board your international flight back to the United States.
