Evening free to relax or explore on your own the many attractive shops, boutiques and restaurants at your doorstep. | | Day 2 | Lima | LIMA CITY OF KINGS Today, City tour of colonial and modern Lima including the world famous Larco Museum. Colonial sites include the lovely Plaza de Armas, Presidential Palace, historic Cathedral where Spanish Conquistador Francisco Pizarro's remains lie, and the exquisite Torre Tagle Palace, modern day seat of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Drive through the modern business district, and the exclusive residential areas of Miraflores and San Isidro. Then continue to Larco Museum, founded in 1926, its remarkable galleries providing an excellent overview of 3000 years of Peruvian pre-Columbian history. This wonderful museum, housed in an 18th century royal mansion built over a 7th century pre-Columbian pyramid, features the finest gold and silver collection from ancient Peru, and the famous erotic archaelogical collection, one of Peru's most visited attractions. B | | Day 3 | Cuzco | LIMA - CUZCO CAPITAL OF AN EMPIRE -THE SACRED VALLEY Early morning transfer from the hotel to the airport for a shortbut spectacular flight over the snowcapped Andes Mountains to the oldest inhabited city in the hemisphere, Cuzco, at an elevation of 11,440 feet. Meet 'n Greet upon arrival and full day excursion to the Pisac Indian Market and the Ollantaytambo Fortress. Drive through the fertile countryside of the Urubamba Valley to the colonial village of Pisac where a colorful Indian market takes place Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays (on other days you will tour the religious nucleus and archaelogical site of Pisac). Enjoy the sights and sounds of the Indian market, testing your skill at bargaining with the natives for beautiful handicraft and jewelry. Overnight at the Libertador Sacred Valley Lodge B, L | | Day 4 | Cuzco | MORAY - MARAS - PISAC ARCHAEOLOGICAL COMPLEX Morning drive through unspoiled and picturesque Andean communities on your way to the Incan agricultural center of Moray, famopus for its sunken amphitheater, made up of four circular terraces, which appear to fade away into the earth like an artificial crater. The site is thought to be an ancient Inca agricultural research station filled with fertile soil and watered by complex irrigation systems, and designed for experimenting with crops at varying high altitudes. Continue to the impressive Maras salt pools formed by water emerging from a lake inside a mountain in the Urubamba Valley. An amazing view of evaporating ponds for the extraction of salt. Learn about ancestral techniques, still used today, in agricultural, irrigation and salt-recollection, as well as Andean festivals and rites. Afternoon, visit Inka archaelogical ruins of Inka Pisac, high atop a hill at the entrance to the valley. This fascinating site includes an ancient irrigation system, astronomical observatory, solar clock and calendar, and served a military, religious and agricultural purpose for the Inkan civilization. Overnight at the Libertador Sacred Valley Lodge B, L | | Day 5 | Machu Picchu | MACHU PICCHU LOST CITY OF THE INKAS Early morning departure for full day excursion via combination of mini-bus and narrow gauge rail Vistadome transportation enjoying scenic views of the Sacred Valley, Urubamba River and colorful Quechuan villages on route to mysterious Inka stronghold, Machu Picchu, literally in the clouds high a top the Peruvian Andes mountain range. Perched 8,200 feet above the valley, it was hidden by mountains and semi-tropical jungle for over 400 years until its discovery by explorer Hiram Bingham of Yale University in 1911. Marvel at its magnificent architecture and engineering, hike the steep stone-paved trail of Huayna Picchu, the pyramid-shaped mountain above Machu Picchu for breathtaking views of these ancient ruins, stroll to the Inka Bridge, secret entrance used by the Inka's armies shape, and walk to the Inka Trail for close up look at the historic Intipunku (Sun Gate). Afternoon, enjoy scenic train ride to Cuzco, ancient capital of the Inka Empire, later inhabited by Spanish conquerors. Overnight at the Terra Andina Hotel (Superior Room) B, D | | Day 7 | Cuzco | CUZCO - CITY TOUR Morning free to wander and explore this extraordinary city on your own. Wander its ancient cobblestone streets, enjoy its mix of Inka and Spanish colonial architecture, and bargain for colorful handicraft and exquisite jewelry in its many shops. Afternoon, guided tour of Cuzco and nearby ancient ruins including important landmarks, Cuzco's impressive Cathedral, Santo Domingo Church, Plaza De Armas and Koricancha, "The Temple of the Sun". Continuing to nearby ruins of Kenko, Puca-Pucara, Tambomachay, and Sacsayhuaman fortress, an impressive example of Inka military architecture.
