Description
Days 1-2
Cavaillon to Fontaine de Vaucluse
Follow quiet lanes through market gardens, then over hills, farmland and scrub woods to Fontaine, exploring en route the ruins of the Mur de la Peste. The spring from which Fontaine derives its name is actually the spot where the River Sorgue breaks to the surface from its underground travels. In summer, the river gently seeps to the surface but in wetter months it bursts forward magnificently.
Days 3-4
Fontaine-de-Vaucluse to Gordes
Walk up a dry gorge, across the hills of the Vaucluse to the 12th century abbey of Senanque. Continue up white rocky hills to Gordes, a tiered village laid out as an amphitheatre overlooking the Sorgue and Calavon rivers. Crowning the village is a majestic chateau at the peak of the hill. Spend a free day exploring the town's historic buildings and soaking up that Provencal air.
Day 5
Gordes to Roussillon
Leaving the ancient streets of Gordes behind, walk through olive groves and across open countryside before reaching a valley filled with the colours and scents of lavender, wheat and poppies.
Day 6
Roussillon to Buoux
The scenery changes as the path winds through ochre quarries and farmland before leading across a plain into the hills. Follow in the footsteps of the Romans and cross a stream before entering Buoux.
Days 7-8
Buoux to Lourmarin
Take in the panoramas of Provence from the ridge of the Luberon. Head down through woods and pastures to Lourmarin. Its narrow streets and Mediterranean-flavoured architecture make it a picturesque place to finish the walk.
