Mention code 6067724 | | Intrepid Travel | | | | Day | Destination | Description | | Days 1-2 | Venice | This Umbrian adventure begins in this magical city. A short stroll will have you acquainted with all the major sights, but the charm of Venice lies in being able to lose yourself in the maze of streets and alleyways. The spacious piazzas are a great place to sit back with an espresso and watch Italian life in action - or go for a gondola ride to experience the amazing canals. | | Days 3-4 | Gubbio | Travel by train and bus to the beautiful medieval town of Gubbio. To make the most of the town's stunning mountain backdrop, dine al fresco at one of the many streetside cafes. Then take a cable car up the steep slopes of Mt Ingino to the Basilica di Sant'Ubaldo, in which lies the mummified body of the Saint Ubaldo, the town's patron saint. Take a hike through medieval hilltop towns and admire the Umbrian countryside. | | Days 5-6 | Assisi and Spello | Home of St Francis, founder of the Franciscan monks, Assisi is one of Italy's most important religious towns. The many wonderful sights here include the Basilica di Santa Chiara and of course, the Basilica di San Francesco. After a day's sightseeing, take the train to nearby Spello, perched on the side of Subasio Mountain and dotted with many ancient Roman monuments. Relax over a glass of the region's specialty at a local wine bar. | | Days 7-8 | Rome | The lively city of Rome is crowded with ancient ruins and religious artefacts, and yet it buzzes with modern life. There is time to visit the historical centre of the city and see some of its many famous landmarks. Be sure to take the time to stop for gelato at one of the city's many atmospheric cafes. |
