Perhaps wander its castle museum or stock up on salami and sausages (Norcia is known for cured meats) before trekking through oak forests to Cascia. From here, follow an ancient pilgrim path along a gorge to Roccaporena, birthplace and home to St Rita, one of Italy's best loved saints. | | Day 3 | Roccaporena to Scheggino | Hike over wooded hills, where the best truffles can be found, then head down an old dirt track to the tiny village of Scheggino. Its ruined castle is a dramatic backdrop to the crooked streets, stone houses and gurgling canals. Tonight, savour regional delicacies at the renowned restaurant in the Hotel del Ponte | | Days 4-5 | Scheggino to Spoleto | Continue along the foothills of the Apennines, through olive groves and chestnut thickets, to Spoleto, once a Lombard stronghold and one of the most powerful states in Italy. Enter the city via the Ponte delle Torri, a striking medieval aqueduct, and spend this final day checking out the monuments and treasures left behind by centuries of civilization. |
