Umbria and Assisi -5 Day Self Guided Walk
5 days Montefalco to Assisi
Walk from Montefalco to Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis, Traverse the tranquil countryside of Italy's 'green heart', Visit some of the finest Umbrian hill towns en route, See superb art including frescoes by Giotto and Pinturicchio, Hike the high open pastures of Monte Subasio, Follow in the footsteps of St Francis
The area we visit is in the heart of Umbria, a verdant stretch of land, which begins on the banks of the Tiber and ends in the spiritual heartland of Assisi. Often referred to as the green heart of Italy, Umbria nevertheless features a diversity of landscape - open rolling hills beneath the moderate peaks of the Apennines, interspersed with small alluvial plains. Roman relics, numerous imposing churches and gaunt monasteries are a testament to the lofty and protected location of some of the archetypal hill towns. These delightful and enduring towns of pinkish stone, some dating back to the Etruscans, are scattered throughout Umbria.

Mention code 6067912 | | Intrepid Travel | | | | Day | Destination | Description | | Days 1-2 | Montefalco to Bevagna | The 'balcony of Umbria', hilltop Montefalco offers spectacular views of the valley below. Wander through its vineyards, down to the walled town of Bevagna, home to Roman temples, magnificent mosaics and medieval churches. Built on a flat river plain, its streets are made for a stroll so spend your free afternoon seeing the sights. | | Day 3 | Bevagna to Spello | Quietly appealing and restful, Spello has a long history as an escape from the demands of city living. Enter through an antique Augustan gate, and admire the town's collection of ancient churches. The Santa Maria Maggiore stands out with its 13th century bell tower, and exquisite chapel. | | Days 4-5 | Spello to Assisi | There are two routes to choose from on this final walk: a path through thick woods over Monte Subasio, or a winding track along the foothills, past the Carceri Hermitage. Assisi, our final destination, is a place which inspires reverence with its abundance of historic churches and monuments, visited by thousands of the faithful each year. Pay your respects to Italy's premier saint in the superb Basilica di Francesco, and don't miss the glowing frescoes by Giotto depicting the story of his life. |
