(B, L, D) | | Day 5 | Passau & Linz or Salzburg | Passau & Linz or Salzburg: Cruise to Passau, where the Rivers Inn and Ilz join the Danube. Built on a narrow rocky tongue of land between the Danube and the Inn, Passau faces the wooded cliffs and the fortress of Oberhaus on the left bank of the Danube. Your city tour takes you to explore this fairytale city founded more than 2,000 years ago. If you wish, take an optional full day excursion to fascinating Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and the site of internationally famous music and drama festivals. Salt mining has historically been important to the city and today it is full of charming houses and quaint streets. For those staying onboard, enjoy a scenic cruise from Passau into Austria and on to Linz. After dinner, take a walk through this delightful town, Austria's third largest city and a major river port. (B, L, D) | | Day 6 | Melk & Vienna | Melk & Vienna: Cruise through the narrow Strudengau and reach the Wachau Valley early this morning. Dock in Melk and take a guided tour of Melk Abbey, one of Europe's great sights. Established as a fortified Benedictine abbey in the 11th century, it was destroyed by fire so that what you see today is 18th-century Baroque and restored in 1996. Cruise through the Wachau Valley, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. With its steep hills, baroque villages, ancient monuments, and over 50 wineries, the valley will captivate you. Reach Vienna where you may explore the city a little on your own after dinner. Until World War I Vienna was the capital of the mighty Habsburg Empire. Rejoin your ship and enjoy dinner as you glide past Slovakia and cruise overnight to Budapest, Hungary's vibrant capital. (B, L, D) | | Day 8 | Budapest | Explore Budapest: Enjoy a morning at leisure to explore the pedestrianized Vaci utca, stroll along the Danube Embankment or try some of the baths for which the city is famous. See some of the seven bridges, including the famous Chain and Elizabeth Bridges, which connect Buda on the right bank with Pest on the left. From historic Buda Castle you will enjoy a splendid view of the twin cities spread over both banks of the River. Your tour also features the distinctive Fisherman's Bastion, the marvelous Royal Palace, St. Stephen's Basilica, and much more.
