The area we visit is in the heart of Umbria, a verdant stretch of land, which begins on the banks of the Tiber and ends in the spiritual heartland of Assisi. Often referred to as the green heart of Italy, Umbria nevertheless features a diversity of landscape - open rolling hills beneath the moderate peaks of the Apennines, interspersed with small alluvial plains. Roman relics, numerous imposing churches and gaunt monasteries are a testament to the lofty and protected location of some of the archetypal hill towns. These delightful and enduring towns of pinkish stone, some dating back to the Etruscans, are scattered throughout Umbria.

Try to take it all in before pedalling up to the high pastures of Monti Martani and on to Giano dell'Umbria, where a charming farmhouse awaits. | | Day 3 | Giano dell'Umbria to Montefalco | Follow winding lanes through vineyards, wheat and barley fields to arrive at Montefalco, the Balcony of Umbria, where breathtaking views of the countryside can be had. | | Day 4 | Montefalco to Bevagna | Cycle country roads from Montefalco to Bevagna, whose ramparts encircle Roman baths, Romanesque churches and a restored 19th century theatre. Delve into the region's history here, and don't forget to try delicious Baci - chocolate-covered hazelnuts. | | Day 5 | Bevagna to Spello | Serene Spello has long been a place to rest or retire and its former inhabitants left behind a legacy of beautiful monuments. This is the perfect place to unwind, exploring the cobbled streets. | | Days 6-8 | Spello to Assisi | Enjoy a final ride across the hills, or for the experienced mountain biker, traverse Monte Sunasio to arrive in Assisi. Visited by thousands of pilgrims every year, Assisi nevertheless remains peaceful. Spend your last day here seeing the many sights in your own time. |
